Pathé Review: Monsters of the Past

Sculptress Virginia May is seen making a clay model of a tyrannosaurus rex, which is animated using stop motion, and then fights a stop-motion triceratops. Although Miss May's only known relationship with the movies is this particular short, her contemporary, Willis O'Brien and his student Ray Harryhausen certainly made the field a lively one until computer animation caught up in the 1990s -- and arguably their artistry is still unsurpassed.

One of the best Bulgarian mountain runners – Kiril Nikolov, known as Disl, attempted to set a new record – to run through the longest and legendary Bulgarian mountain route – 600 km from the mountain peak of Kom on the west border to cape Emine on the Black Sea coast, in less than 5 days. Through steep mountain paths, pouring rain, and sticky mud, the glorious adventure takes him beyond the barriers of his own consciousness, facing hidden fears, pain and exhaustion. Alias Nick and Nora

Alias Nick and Nora: Two Documentary Profiles (2005) celebrates the enduring screen partnership of William Powell and Myrna Loy, stars of MGM’s beloved Thin Man series. The DVD includes William Powell: A True Gentleman, a documentary narrated by Michael York with commentary from film historians Rudy Behlmer and Leonard Maltin, and Myrna Loy: So Nice to Come Home To, hosted by Kathleen Turner and directed by Richard Schickel. Together, the documentaries explore the careers, personalities, and lasting appeal of two classic Hollywood icons. Also included is “Darling, I Loathe You,” a 1958 episode of The Thin Man television series starring Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk as Nick and Nora Charles, plus the 1936 Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of The Thin Man, featuring William Powell and Myrna Loy reprising their signature roles. A welcome addition for classic-film fans, the disc presents Nick and Nora across documentary, television, and radio.

Workers Exit from the Confiança Shirt Factory

A large number of workers, mostly young women, leave by the front door of their work place at lunch time. The building has an impressive colonnaded facade, and is located at 181, Santa Catarine St., Porto - one of the city's main streets. A passengers' horse cart crosses from right to left of the screen, and a few seconds after an ox cart carrying merchandise crosses in the opposite direction. All the while, workers keep leaving the factory, giving a sense of a large work force.

Filmed in 1896 by Alexandre Promio for the Lumière company, this short actuality presents one of the earliest traveling shots in cinema. With the camera mounted on a gondola, the film glides along Venice’s Grand Canal, capturing passing gondolas, bustling waterfront activity, and the city’s iconic architecture from a moving perspective. This simple yet groundbreaking technique introduced audiences to a new way of experiencing motion on screen.

In this special edition of Dark Land, former chief constable Jackie Roberts returns to re-examine the hunt for the man who would go down in history as Wales’s worst serial killer. Moore is revealed as a man with a violent secret life, hiding in plain sight. Beneath the façade of a respectable businessman was a mind warped by a dysfunctional upbringing; a man who seized upon a climate of gay prejudice to embark upon a 20-year spree of savage attacks, confident his victims wouldn’t feel able to come forward to complain.
