Peret is a gypsy singer who, despite family opposition, becomes the most international artist in Spain. Subjected to both family and regime pressures, his individualistic character and vision lead him to abandon his career to devote himself to spreading the word of God; but Peret returns as "king of the Catalan rumba", flees from the pressure of success and rescues the remains of his family.
