Thunderlust and The Middle Beast

Long-haired, loud, and a real long way from home. The hip thrusting glam metal band with an image problem has come to a part of the world that suffers the same. The Middle East. Their mission: make music videos, and get out alive. The band are furious though when they learn that management has given the job of directing their videos to a relatively inexperienced Jordanian film maker by the name of Anas. Dealing with the band's egos, tantrums and paranoia, Anas struggles to help the band create the right image for their new songs. It all makes for a volatile but hilarious mix. The band soon falls apart though and Anas faces even greater pressure to pull the video clips off. For as he knows too well; in a world that rocks, image makes the difference.

The Handbook of Suicide Prevention

Death is a moment whose reverberation endures for the living. Three students from the Audio-Visual team are shooting a documentary on a schoolmate who has recently committed suicide. It is intended to convey a ‘positive message’ to the entire school about the importance of life. During interviews, the students notice some discrepancies in the testimonies, particularly those by a prefect and a teacher, while friends of the deceased seem to be withholding some inconvenient truth. Should the team pursue the truth, or act as the school’s propagandist? Filmed in a mocumentary style, The Handbook of Suicide Prevention challenges and exposes the hypocrisy and suppression that haunt adolescence.

Blah Airlines Flight 101

A five hour and forty-five minute film set on board a BLAH Airlines flight - the boring, beige and dull antithesis of the innovative and stylish experience when flying Virgin America. The film, which will be screened on April 10 as part of the official DIFF Festival Line-Up, is a surrealistic and humorous work of cinema vérité that exposes the grim reality of commercial air travel - characterized by cramped seats, harsh lighting and a lack of entertainment and meal options.
