Antarctica from Above

At the bottom of the world is a place of wild isolation. Antarctica. Its vastness and extremes defy description. From volcanoes to glaciers... and peaks that scrape the sky, its geography is like nothing else in the world. Its wildlife embraces harsh, alien landscapes. And the people that make their home there for part of the year survive amidst unbelievable conditions, thanks to some of the most creative problem-solving on the planet. Filmed principally in the Sub-Antarctic and Ross Sea region as a series of vignettes - each based around one astonishing location after another - viewers will explore one of the most remote, and least-visited parts of the continent; less than 500 tourists make the journey to this region each year. Few places on earth capture the imagination like the great white continent. Now see it as it’s never been viewed before.

No Man's Land

Lionel Daudet and Isabelle Autissier are renewing their collaboration for a combined sailing and mountaineering expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula. The crew consists of three sailors and three mountaineers, whose skills complement each other perfectly. Departing from Ushuaia, their goal is to reach summits that have rarely, if ever, been climbed. Isabelle's boat, "Ada Dos," will serve as their mobile base camp. Ice, wind, and fog are just some of the obstacles that make both sea and land routes difficult, making access to the continent complex and unpredictable. The ascents are technical and require meticulous planning. Their only regret will be not being able to climb Pierre Premier, as the risks involved are simply too great.

The Dalfram Dispute 1938: Pig Iron Bob

On November 15, 1938 the steamship Dalfram berthed at No. 4 jetty Port Kembla to load pig iron for Kobe, Japan. Ted Roach, Branch Secretary, addressed the men at the labour pick up for the Dalfram. He told the men of the destination of the pig iron and the use of the pig iron in the use of weapons – first to be used against the Chinese and they feared that eventually - against Australia. At 11 am the men walked off the ship declaring they refused to load pig iron for Japan to turn into weapons. It led to an eleven week lock-out, with incredible pressure being applied by the government of the day. On the 11th of January 1939, Robert Menzies Attorney General at the time, came to Wollongong to sort out the dispute. He met with an angry crowd where a lady screamed out Pig Iron Bob for the first time. It lasted his lifetime.
