Scars of Growth

The Green Deal, Europe’s new growth strategy, is Brussels' recipe to save the planet from climate collapse. With electric cars and renewables, the EU believes it can promote economic growth while protecting the planet. Is that possible? Green technologies require many critical metals that are supplied mainly by China. To reduce dependencies, politicians are in favor of reopening “green” mines in Europe. But people living in the areas are worried that their lives will be sacrificed for the energy transition. This is the case of Hector, a Spanish farmer, and Matti and Karin Niia, two Swedish reindeer herders. They are determined to fight against these projects that threaten their way of life. While the industry is lobbying for the adoption of an EU law on critical raw materials to facilitate the opening of new mines, Diego, from an environmental NGO, travels across Europe to investigate whether mining can ever be truly sustainable.

Atlantis

Atlantis is filmmaker Luc Besson's celebration of the beauty and wonder of the world beneath the sea, expanding upon themes touched on in his film The Big Blue. Combining stunning underwater cinematography and a hypnotic score by Eric Serra, Besson's singular vision defies dialogue or narrative structure to explore ocean life as you've never seen it before. Following the colossal success of The Big Blue, Luc Besson crisscrossed the world's seas and oceans to film the beauty and diversity of marine life: from the giant octopuses of Vancouver to the manta rays of the Pacific (New Caledonia), and the grey sharks of Tahiti. A film with no actors or sets other than the underwater world. A breathtaking view of marine species: sharks, dolphins, manatees, octopuses. An exploration of the seabed in the Bahamas, the Galapagos, Vancouver, and Tahiti.

The Earth Is Blue as an Orange

While the outside world is made up of bombings and chaos, the family is managing to keep their home a safe haven, full of life and full of light. Every member of the family has a passion for cinema, motivating them to shoot a film inspired by their own life during a time of war. The creative process raises the question of what kind of power the magical world of cinema could have during times of disaster. How to picture war through fiction? For Anna and the children, transforming trauma into a work of art is the ultimate way to stay human.

California Company Town

Lee Anne Schmitt explores California's landscape and past to document the history of one-time boom towns built and abandoned by the industries that necessitated their creation. Sold as a limitless land expansive with free opportunity, California was actually, from its onset, fissured by the interwoven needs of private and public interests. Schmitt's film covers various locations through time, as the major industries of the early 20th century (mining, lumber, oil) give way to the military, eventually leading to multinational corporations, and the use of small towns as satellites for growing urban metropolises.

Evidently, this is exactly what he was aiming for. Dario is disappointed with current climate policies and sees only one solution: strike out and resist. His resistance has already led to several outstanding criminal proceedings against him in Germany. A request from Switzerland comes at just the right moment to prove himself further: the activist group “Klimastreik” is looking for someone who is willing to commit a “crime”.
