Tchaikovsky’s Evgenij Onegin was presented at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma in February 2020 in Robert Carsen’s acclaimed production, originally created for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Based on Alexander Pushkin’s celebrated verse novel, the opera portrays a poignant tale of unrequited love, missed opportunities and the devastating consequences of pride. Michael Levine’s evocative sets and costumes create a poetic vision of nineteenth-century Russia, moving from the warm colours of autumn to the colder tones of the final confrontation. James Conlon conducts the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma Orchestra and Chorus, with Markus Werba as Onegin, Maria Bayankina as Tatiana and Saimir Pirgu as Lensky.
