In 1375, China was in chaos between Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty. Coryo (an ancient kingdom of Korea then) sent a delegation of many diplomats, soldiers and a silent slave to make peace with the new Chinese government. However, this delegation got charged as spies and sent in exile to a remote desert.

The already old King Charles IV. is fully devoted to politics and reigning and does not have as much time for his wife Anna Svídnická (third in line) as the young and in love monarch would like. Anna therefore weaves a small intrigue to incite the king to jealousy. The second picture from the life of the aging Charles IV. concerns his last wife Elizabeth. On the contrary, she does not desire the king's tenderness at all and prefers to devote herself to the problems of the monarchy. But this time it is the king who craves marital joys, and therefore tries to arouse jealousy in the queen...

Black Death

One day he receives a summons from his father John of Luxembourg (Milos Kopecký) in Italy. He leaves for Italy accompanied by a deputation from Bohemia. On the way the prince's company fights a battle with armed Milanese against heavy odds. Thanks to Charles's perspicacity, the prince's almost naked soldiers win through. In Lucca in Italy Charles joins his father, and here he experiences an amorous adventure and escapes from the traps laid by the Italian rebels.

Through the use of a remarkably complete set of documentary records, he explores one village - that of Codicote in Hertfordshire - looking at its boom times and its poorer times. Wood brings the period to life by focusing in on one family, that of the poor peasant Christina Cok, her father Hugh, her estranged husband William, and her children John and Alice. By looking at the poorest members of Codicote's society, Wood approaches his history from the bottom-up rather than taking the traditional historical approach of top-down, 'kings and barons' story-telling.
