One day, SVT reporter Hannes Råstam receives a strange phone call that sheds an entirely new light on the wave of arsons that struck Falun in the mid-1970s. The fires wiped out parts of the town’s historic architecture, terrorized the population, and triggered an unprecedented police operation. According to the police investigation, two gangs of youths were behind the fires. A thirteen-year-old girl was held in custody and denied the right to call her mother unless she confessed. Others told reporter Hannes Råstam that they were threatened with being kept locked up “until they rotted.” The police investigation concluded with eight children and youths confessing to having set more than fifty fires. They were placed in children’s homes or sentenced to forensic psychiatric care. Today, all of them maintain that they were innocent and were coerced into confessing. One man now claims that he alone set the fires and wants this miscarriage of justice to be exposed.

The Last Day on Duty

The film covers the last stretch of the career of Javier Herrán, a firefighter stationed in Urioste (Bizkaia). As he approaches retirement, you will get an insight into the workings of a well-oiled group and, particularly, the life of one of the brigade’s most eccentric firefighters with rank of corporal, who does not want to face up to retirement. The film focusing on his journey along with Javier Galbarriartu opens a window onto the work of a profession whose members risk their lives for other citizens. This documentary that discusses life and ageing reveals the feelings of the main character who still seems young, both physically and at heart, and who loves a job that he does not want to give up.

To fight them, there is a special organization, an elite group, the tackles fires in a way that is unique in the world: direct attack. This group is called BRICA. A helicopter transports them to the front line of the fire and, armed only with chainsaws, axes courage, they fight flames that are 50 meters high. Through three of its members - Gustavo, the leader; Abarca, the veteran about to retire; and "Curiño", the rookie who has just joined the group- we see their day to day lives.

The film focuses on four women from different generations of Apache 8 crewmembers who speak tenderly and often humorously of hardship, loss, family, community and pride in being a firefighter.
