This docu-fictional hybrid production discusses such questions with the help of authentic interview snippets that were edited under the staged plot. We get an insight into the life of an animal couple, who experience typical everyday situations on behalf of us humans. At first, our fox is emotionally contained, while the penguin lady may get wild as hell. With a wink, the filmmakers hold up a mirror to the audience in the cinema.

The Deal

Stop-motion animation on the arranging of marriages in 1950/60s set in the Eastern-Polish borderland. The script is based on a part of Mikołaj Smyk's diary, the director's grandfather. The biographical objects used in the animation, such as an authentic headscarf, Polish and Russian books, the copy of Mikołaj Smyk's diary and photographs help situate the story in its original environment.

Child marriages have been an unnoticed reality in some sections of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka. This film tells the story of Fatima, a 16-year old school girl, who is set to marry a man far older than her. Not only her right to education is denied but her consent to marriage too. Until she accidentally meets her future husband, she has not even seen him. She is caught up between her hopes and the reality of her destiny.

The Betrothed

In Italy, couples prepare for their imminent weddings. The bureaucratic State and the dogmatic Church oversee the nuptials. Municipal employees listen to couples' statements and intentions. A provincial priest delivers a matrimonial lesson: speaking of faith and science, spirituality, and sexuality.

The 30-minute Perempuan Tana Humba is a much more straightforward documentary, focusing more on Sumba culture and women in three short chapters: “Marapu”, “Belis” and “Perkawinan”.
